The Single-Ply Application ProcessSingle-Ply roofing materials can be mechanically attached, ballasted, or fully adhered to a wide variety of roofing substrates including concrete, gravel built-up, metal, modified bitumen and smooth built-up roofing. The process can be complex and at times, dangerous, so we recommend using a professional, approved dealer to ensure weatherability, waterproofing, and warranty qualification. 1. Roll Out the Single-Ply Membrane
All roof surfaces to be covered must be clean, dry and free of any oil, grease or dirt. The single-ply membrane is then rolled out over the surface with adjoining sheets overlapping each other just a bit. 2. Attach the Membrane to the Roof Substrate
Depending on several factors, the membrane is attached to the roof using screws, mechanical fasteners or super strong adhesives and heat welding. As shown in the image above, some single-ply material comes with the adhesive already applied to the roof side of the membrane. With these "peel-and-stick" type roofing materials, the adhesive is concealed behind a peel away backer that is removed on the job site after roll out. This provides a very strong seal of the membrane to the roof surface. 3. Waterproof and Seal the Membrane Seams
Regardless of the method of attachment or material used, the overlap between adjoining sheets of single-ply membrane is flattened, rolled out and sealed using mechanical methods, heat welding or extremely strong adhesives. When installed correctly by an approved roofing dealer, the seams can actually be stronger than the TPO membrane itself! 4. Detail Extrusions, Flashings, Roof Top Equipment, and Parapets
Special care is taken with installing single-ply and special pre-molded pipe boots, flashings, corners and covers are readily available to detail and seal all aspects of the traditional commercial roof. Once the membrane installation is complete, you should have a manufacturer's warranty protected, professionally installed roof that will last for many years to come. |
